This week’s blog is dedicated to individuals who are currently being held in captivity by their eating disorder but find it too frightening to ask for help. Loved ones may be encouraging you to seek treatment but you are blinded by the allure of what your eating disorder has promised but not yet delivered. Eating disorders promise happiness, acceptance, and control only after you have satisfied the food and weight requirements. The dangerous path it leads you down is one of self-destruction and disappointment all in the name of thinness.
Some of you may be reading this thinking that your behaviors aren’t that out of control yet. You have managed to juggle work or school with the demands of your eating disorder and are at least “getting by”. But life is about more than just surviving; it’s about embracing all it has to offer and thriving. As long as your eating disorder has any amount of control over your thoughts and behaviors, you will never be truly free to experience the life God has designed for you. Jeremiah 29:11 tells us that He knows the plans He has for each one us; plans for good and not evil, for a hope and a future. However, it is your eating disorder’s desire to keep you from believing that those promises are for you regardless of your shape or size.
If you are struggling with any type of eating disordered behavior, I encourage you to consider taking the next step towards recovery. Allowing others to support you and guide you along this journey is not a sign of weakness but rather the recognition of your own humanness. Choose to believe that you are worthy of treatment and that full recovery from your eating disorder is possible.
